Kenya’s Focus on Mental Health: Increasing Emphasis on Wellness

Mental wellness is a crucial aspect of overall health and well-being. In recent years, Kenya has been taking steps to increase its focus on mental health and provide better support for its citizens.

In 2015, the government introduced the Kenya Mental Health Policy, which provides a framework for interventions to secure mental health systems reforms in Kenya. This policy is in line with the Constitution of Kenya 2010, Vision 2030, the Kenya Health Policy (2014-2030), and global commitments.

The policy seeks to address systemic challenges, and emerging trends, and mitigate the burden of mental health problems and disorders. The goal of this policy is to attain the highest standard of mental health.

One example of how this policy is being implemented is through the work of Dr. Gladys Mwiti. Dr. Mwiti is a Kenyan psychologist who runs an organization that provides mental health care. She discusses the barriers to mental health services and how to support those who need help, especially in underserved communities.

Dr. Mwiti notes that access to mental health services is critical because it is one of the parts that make a whole individual. She explains that when you neglect mental health, you neglect the whole person.

Despite these efforts, there are still challenges to providing adequate mental health care in Kenya. One of the main challenges is the poor diagnosis and lack of service provision. Although there is a huge need for mental health services, the country has only 100 psychiatrists.

However, progress is being made, and there has been an evolution of awareness about mental health over the years. More universities are now offering psychology training, and there is a growing recognition of the importance of mental health.

In conclusion, Kenya is taking steps to increase its focus on mental wellness and provide better support for its citizens. While challenges remain, progress is being made toward attaining the highest standard of mental health.
